Principalities and Powers

“We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers.”

How familiar those words, but it seems that it is the flesh and blood that get attacked and we forget that behind all the temporal is a world of power that initiates the attacks. The husband of one team member, father of another, is seriously ill and having surgery today. Obviously, his wife and daughter are not going to hop on a plane in two days and leave him to fend for himself.

Delays are hard. Uncertainty is hard. Not knowing outcomes is very hard.

Is this an outright spiritual attack on the team? Isn’t this just a flesh and blood issue? Yes, it concerns flesh and blood, but what about the timing. Is it mere chance that this is the week this man suddenly has a medical emergency, when it could have been three weeks ago and be done and over? Or is it this week so that his wife and daughter are still here, whereas next week they would be half a world away and trying to decide whether or not to come home?

Those are the answers that elude me.

In the midst of sorting, packing, and final arrangements, I simply have to hand it over to the Father and ask him to handle it as he chooses. As I should with all issues, but it is far more human to try to solve them myself, forgetting that all of life belongs to him – flesh and blood, and the battles with principalities and powers.
